Chihli (or Zhili) was a province originally incorporating the present-day capital city of Beijing. The word ‘Zhihli’ translates to ‘centrally ruled’, in other words, the region was under the directed administration of the Emperor rather than functioning as a normal province. Chihli had several mints, the earliest beginning operations in 1645 AD.
