Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum

The reverse shows Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum (Chinese: 中山陵 ), which is situated at the foot of the second peak of Mount Zijin (Purple Mountain) in Nanjing, China. Construction of the tomb started in January 1926, and was finished in spring of 1929. The architect was Lu Yanzhi, who died shortly after it was finished.

The obverse shows a close-up profile of Sun Yat-sen. Sun Yat-sen was the president of Nationalist China and is referred to as the “Father of the Nation” and “forerunner of democratic revolution” in the People’s Republic of China. He was instrumental in the overthrow of the Qing dynasty and was the first provisional president of the new republic. He is unique among 20th century Chinese politicians for being revered by both the Nationalist and the Communist Chinese.

In the early twentieth century, China had no central bank. The monetary system was based on private banks that used silver as the primary medium of exchange. A year after the Nationalist Party came to power in 1927, the Central Bank of China was established and the country went on a Chinese silver-dollar standard.
