The obverse shows a close-up profile of Sun Yat-sen. Sun Yat-sen was the president of Nationalist China and is referred to as the “Father of the Nation” and “forerunner of democratic revolution” in the People’s Republic of China. He was instrumental in the overthrow of the Qing dynasty and was the first provisional president of the new republic. He is unique among 20th century Chinese politicians for being revered by both the Nationalist and the Communist Chinese.
The reverse depicts a Chinese junk boat. It is an ancient sailing vessel that is still in use today. They were used 200 years BC and as sea-going vessels by the 2nd century AD. They are efficient and sturdy and were capable of carrying men and commerce on the high stormy seas as well as on inland waterways.
